Why WiX is a bad idea

WiX can be a great solution for those needing a website, but you really need to understand what you are getting yourself into.

Let’s say, you run a business. You need a website. You don’t have a ton of money to spend on website design and development. So, you see their advertisements stating you can build a great looking website with WiX, for FREE, with no coding experience necessary.  This ad will be next to a great looking website. Seems like a great idea..what could go wrong.

So, why is it a bad idea for your business or website? Let’s take a deeper look at our friends at WiX…

How it is built matters.

WiX looks like a great platform. When you dig a little deeper thing change quickly.

Do not overlook some of these very important things if you choose to use them for your web presence. These being, control of your content, how their pages function when it comes to search engine optimization , including how Google’s search algorithms determine how your site gets ranked based on technologies like JavaScript and AJAX.

Think you own your content. Think again.

While you have complete control of what content you place on your site, WiX can use, distribute, reproduce, modify and adapt your content. Don’t believe that? Here’s proof:

WiX Terms of Use (http://www.wix.com/about/terms-of-use) states:

Wix does not claim any intellectual property rights over the User Submissions. However, under the their Terms of Use, you grant them “worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive license to use, distribute, reproduce, modify, adapt, publicly perform and publicly display such User Submissions.”

So lets be crystal clear. By signing up for their web services, you are and will be allowing them to use and modify your site and your site’s content simply by agreeing to the Terms of Use. To what ever might suit them.

SEO is a not an option.

When you decide to use WiX for your site, you are forced into using their proprietary on-page SEO tools. It serves the basics, but that’s it. Adding to this nightmare, WiX uses “hashbang” URLs being served by JavaScript.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the most important items of any website. It’s one of the first things our clients ask, “How do I rank higher?” SEO is easy to tackle when building a website in a content management system (CMS) such as WordPress or Joomla. You develop your strategy and you implement it across every page, blog post and portfolio piece. It works and it’s easy.

With a Wix.com site, implementing an SEO strategy is close as you can get to impossible. You do not have the option to download an SEO boosting plugin. Instead, you have a on-page SEO that they offer.  You can get the very basics done. Again very basic.

Once you’re on WiX, you’re there.

Making a commitment to start with WiX, means you’re  pretty much stuck with them.

See should you figure out you need to change platforms and get on hosting services that offer features that they do not offer, it means you will have to start all over from square one. There are some ways to move your site and content away from them, but none of the options are easy or quick.

No admin page and limited plugin options.

Unlike WordPress, Joomla or other CMS platforms, WiX does not offer an Admin area for controlling your site.

Everything is controlled with floating windows or widgets. These make it tough for someone not proficient with coding to customize or edit your website, including adding any plugin or feature that is not already supported.

eCommerce is not free.

There are plugins you can use with WiX that will allow you to run a eCommerce site.

Everyone at some time will need an eCommerce solution . Although, these plugins cannot be used on the free version of any WiX sites. Also, you will be limited to using pre-selected payment gateways, such as PayPal or Authorize.net.

WordPress, offers server free plugins that allow you to create your own online store and sell anything you want. Each of these plugins has their own features and limitations. WooCommerce for example, will allow you to use any payment gateway method of your choice. Even handling credit card processing in-house and on-site.
